Current Report

Yellowstone National Park has closed for fishing until Memorial Day Weekend in 2008. However, the Madison and Gallatin Rivers in Montana offer great fishing through the winter months. While drifting nymphs under an indicator is usually the best way to hook numbers of fish on these rivers, midges do provide good dry fly fishing and streamers can be surprisingly effective in the chilly flows. Look for fish in slower water than they are found in the summer and bigger pools tend to congregate numbers of fish. Rising fish are typically in the slowest of water, so concentrate on these spots when looking for surface feeders.
