We're in the middle of our big fall run of Brown Trout on the Madison River in Yellowstone National Park. This is when the the Brown Trout make their way out of Hebgen Lake and into the Madison River, closely followed by the Rainbows. These are the days we all wait for.
The weather has turned colder with the possibility of rain or snow on any given day. With this cooler weather it really gets the Browns moving. With this change in weather you'll also see our fishing tactics change. The MRO Team will start fishing a lot of streamers and swinging soft hackles, but nymphing is always a viable option. We just like to mix it up some.
There's nothing quite like feeling the hard tug on a tight line when swinging a soft hackle often followed by what looks like someone just chucked a bowling ball into the river where your fly is. Seeing a big Brown Trout crush your streamer is another thrill you should put on your bucket list. We're talking Brown Trout consistently in the 18 to 24 inch range and sometimes bigger.
It's not too late to enjoy fly fishing this fall or to start making plans to come to West Yellowstone next year for some fall fly fishing.
