Our snow started off slow this fall, but once December hit, we got buried in it the entire month. At this point we over 100% of our normal winter snowpack. The forecast says we should receive more this week and with any luck will continue over the next few months. This bodes well for our rivers and fish.
We’ve been getting a little fly fishing in this winter. MRO guide Jake Schilling has been having some pretty good luck trout spey fishing on the Upper Madison River around the West Fork and Pine Butte areas. Primarily swinging soft hackles and bead head leaches.
Typically, as we approach February, and the water temps warm up a couple of degrees we should begin to see some midge hatches. It can be a lot of fun dry fly fishing with small midges trying to get these risers to eat.
Below are some pictures of the West Fork area that Jake sent us.
With the 2022 fishing season just around the corner, it’s time for us to start preparing for this year’s season. That means it’s time to begin our search for a few good people to join the MRO shop staff. If you have a passion for fly fishing or a desire to experience fly fishing in a new way, this may be the job for you. We are looking for knowledgeable and enthusiastic anglers to join our team.
