Update as of May 28th, 2020
Montana Entrances to Yellowstone Open June 1st. Click here to read press release.
April 30th, 2020
The state of Montana has begun a phased reopening of its economy. Currently, we are in Phase 1, which allows nonessential businesses such as Madison River Outfitters to open our doors. Even under normal circumstances, our retail store in West Yellowstone is closed from November through mid-April so the impact of COVID 19 on our business has been minimal so far.
May 5th, Cinco de Mayo, is our scheduled opening date. We will be celebrating the occasion by toasting a Pacifico (not a Corona) or two. Under Phase 1, the biggest restriction on our business and statewide tourism, in general, is the mandatory 14-day self-quarantine on all non-residents entering the state. Since non-residents are 90% or more of our customer base, it will not be business as usual for our retail or guiding business until the quarantine is lifted. But our fly shop will be open seven days a week with hours of 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. beginning May 5th.
New reservations for our guided fishing trips have slowed down as this pandemic has spread but we have been pleasantly surprised at how few cancellations we have had for trips that were already booked for June through October. It shows that people really want to go fishing and are optimistic they will be able to fish with us again this season. All of us at MRO share the optimism and our outlook is positive that 2020 will be a great season to fish the West Yellowstone area.
Someone on our crew is fishing the Madison just about every day now. The river is still running clear in pre-runoff conditions and fishing has been excellent. Now that we are about to reopen we will be posting our fishing report with fresh photos every week. Our reports will also include updates on the COVID 19 situation here, especially any changes in the non-resident quarantine mandate. We hope our reports brighten your day until you can join us for some great days on the river.
