Winter Fly Fishing

Madison River Fishing Report

It's hard to believe that our fishing season in Yellowstone National Park officially ended one month ago and that we closed the fly shop for the winter.

However that doesn't mean the fishing has ended outside the park on the Upper Madison River.  I'll admit you need to be a die hard (some have thrown the word crazy out there) fly fisherman to endure our winter season on the rivers here. But for some of the MRO Team we love it.  The winter solitude and beauty is astounding. Plus the fishing can be pretty darn good.

If you're unprepared for winter fishing, or are just due for a new jacket- check out our on-line store, we currently have sales going on Simms/Patagonia waders, boots and jackets through through the holiday season.

Currently the fly shop is closed but someone is usually around to help you with any questions or book a 2017 Guide Trip for you..  Don't hesitate to call 406-646-9644or email trout@madisonriveroutfitters.com for the most up to date reports!

The On-line Fly Shop is open 24/7 throughout the winter months.

Upper Madison (Hebgen-Ennis)

Madison River Water Flows at Kirby Ranch

We had some wind and a lot of snow yesterday and the weather outlook for the upcoming week is cold. With lows below zero and a high of 26 degrees on Friday.  This may be a week that you want to stay inside by the fire.

Weather for West Yellowstone

With the cold and snow this past week our fishing info is limited.  However I did get some info from a couple of MRO Team Members who were fishing the wade section between Raynolds Bridge and the West Fork this weekend.

Per usual this time of year they were taking fish while nymph fishing.  On top the the fish seemed to prefer #10-12 Biot Golden Stones and #8-10 Black Sili Legs.  As droppers the choice was #18 Black Zebra Midges, #18 Frenchies and #18 Black Crystal Dips.

Upper Gallatin

I haven't gotten a report lately about the Gallatin River.  I may have to brave the weather this weak and head to the Gallatin myself.

After a month off after the end of the season we'll all be getting back to rivers and we'll have more fishing information for you in the weeks to come
