OPST's Commando Skagit Heads are the result of decades of focus on sustained anchor systemology (SAS) by Ed Ward. They are designed to expand the capabilities of shorter spey rods, switch rods and single hand rods beyond that of normal. These heads give the fly fisher a method of delivering streamers with less space than ever before. High banks, low canopies, and generating tailwaters all turn into very accessible water with our heads. You may be surprised at their short length, but this was no accident. The ultra-short design provides an effortless casting feel and enhances performance in circumstances of restricted casting room, troublesome winds and in casting bulky flies. Lazer-sharp loops and delicate presentations are now possible with a Commando Head, with our new floating Commando Tips in 5, 7.5 and 10 foot lengths. They match with rods from 6 to at least 11 feet long, making them ideal for just about any trout rod you own. The tip our trout and smallmouth anglers have been waiting for. 5 feet, 40 grains, and three different sink rates: S2, S4 and S6. Finally, there is a micro tip optimized for single hand rods under 9 ft.
Generally, we like these tips on single hand rods that are 9ft. or less, and also are less than a 6 weight. However, there are definitely exceptions to this based on personal preference and on rod variances.
